Job Description
How You Will Make An Impact
The thredUP Merch Eng team is responsible for building an e-commerce experience that helps our diverse users sift through an ever-expanding catalog of unique items. As part of the broader Product Engineering org, you will work directly alongside PMs, UX designers, marketers, and data scientists to continuously refine and reinvent the ways customers shop, discover, & buy clothing through thredUP. As an Engineering Manager in this space, you’ll not only build, nurture, and lead a world-class, full-stack engineering team, you’ll also serve as the Engineering thought partner with your cross-functional teammates. You’ll help lead the entire product development process, from conception and architectural design, to development and deployment, to post-production operations and retrospectives. You’ll exercise strong judgment in guiding the team to balance a high technical bar with rapid execution. You’ll work alongside other members of the engineering leadership team to set longer term technical and organizational visions that will mature both our tech stack and product development processes.
In This Role You’ll Get To:
Manage a full-stack team of 8 engineers spanning front-end web apps, native mobile apps and back-end services that power our Search & Browsing UX
Relentlessly refine the thredUP Search UX by helping customers find what they’re looking for as quickly as possible
Be an innovative thought partner in designing and architecting new UXs that set the industry bar for browsing and shopping for clothing online
Promote an inclusive team culture that challenges and empowers everyone to do the best work of their careers
Coach, mentor, and manage the career development of your team members
Drive developer execution by organizing team work, setting goals, and holding the team accountable
Collaborate with cross-functional partners to develop & prioritize engineering roadmaps and proactively drive projects to completion
Participate in technical architecture and implementation ideation that will meet immediate business needs and can function at scale
Effectively communicate feedback and decisions to your internal team and external partners
Identify organizational optimizations that will help improve development speed and quality
What We’re Looking For:
3+ years of experience managing full-stack software engineering teams that employ robust SDLC processes and best practices
Strong Computer Science fundamentals and architectural experience
Particular familiarity with modern search architectures and how to scale them (including but not limited to Elasticsearch/OpenSearch)
Comfort leading teams through microservice decomposition, distributed system design, and event-driven architectures
Experience working alongside Product Managers, Product Designers, Data Scientists, and other Engineering teams
Passion for both Product and People development
Strong interpersonal-skills and a consistent energy that motivates the people around you
A lifelong learner with a demonstrated history of continuous self-improvement
At thredUP, your base pay is one part of your total compensation package. This role pays between $150,000 and $230,000, and your actual base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location.
Many thredUP employees also have the opportunity to own shares of thredUP stock, thredUP employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, as well as a discount when purchasing thredUP stock if voluntarily participating in thredUP’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Subject to eligibility requirements, you’ll also receive other benefits: Comprehensive medical & dental coverage, vision, 401k, life and disability insurance.
