Okta is looking for a Director of Technical Documentation for a team of talented and motivated technical writers. You will report to a senior leader in Engineering and oversee technical documentation for all administrators, end users, and developers, across all of our products.

Your impact and scope of responsibilities will primarily focus on the following:

Content

  • You will have hands-on experience delivering new technical content at a fast pace with high quality and a passion for continuous improvement of existing content and architecture. 

Modernize infrastructure and process

  • You will have hands-on experience and a passion for modernizing the technical writing infrastructure for maximum efficiency. This includes partnering with engineering to continuously evaluate and implement the right tools and processes for your teams’ and business needs. 

Scale and grow the people

  • You will have hired, trained, managed, coached and mentored writers as well as technical documentation manager(s) reporting to you. You bring creative solutions to optimally scale your team to current and upcoming product priorities.
  • You will have experience working with engineering, product, and other leadership to strategize on the right allocation of writers to engineering and product according to business needs. 

Cross functional content collaboration

  • You will have experience working cross functionally with knowledge teams across the company such as marketing, customer support and educational services to share knowledge, documentation tooling, and ideas where appropriate to ensure consistency and quality of content across the company. 

Localization a plus 

  • Additionally your experience with translating and localizing content to other languages will be a big plus. 

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the delivery of technical documentation for all of Okta’s products, targeting administrators, end users, and developers, on Okta’s help documentation site, developer site and vendor sites 
  • Oversee the delivery of weekly release notes for enhancements and bug fixes, and the delivery of monthly release notes of  new features added. 
  • Continuously improve content architecture and content quality
  • Partner with engineering team(s) to continuously improve and modernize doc infrastructure and processes
  • Manage, coach, and mentor a group of 20+ talented and motivated writers  
  • Manage, coach and mentor technical documentation manager(s) reporting to you
  • Work with engineering and product leadership on the right allocation of writers to engineering and product. 
  • Collaborate with the globalization team for the translation and localization of documentation to other languages
  • Interface with leaders in Engineering, QA, Product Management, Technical Support, and Marketing 

Minimum REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • 10+ years of technical documentation experience in a technology company. Practical experience in topic-based writing, minimalism, and scenario-driven development.
  • 10+ years leading and managing technical writers and managers of technical writers developing software documentation in an Agile scrum software development life cycle (SDLC) environment.
  • Hands-on experience with evaluation and implementation of various forms of documentation delivery technologies and tools such as Madcap Flare or DITA based tools such as Oxygen
  • Hands on experience working with engineering on the improvement of processes for technical writing and engineering releases
  • Ability to effectively manage a remote and/or geographically dispersed team.
  • Proven track record in performance management and career development of individual contributors.
  • Solid knowledge of XML, HTML and system administration tasks on Windows/Mac platforms, including role administration, system and mobile configurations, rule and policy management, security, and distributed deployment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience using Git or other version-control systems.
  • Experience with cloud computing, web services, Identity, Platform or related areas.
  • Experience with localization and translations of documents in various languages 
  • Experience with Madcap Flare or other equivalent tooling

Education and Training:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, Technical and/or Professional Writing, Library & Information Science, Engineering, Management related degree or equivalent professional experience.
